Overriding the traversal type

Change how the vehicle will traverse across the field between non-adjacent passes.

Overview

Sometimes, after generating a mission for your vehicle, you might notice it crosses the field in ways you don't like. There's a feature in the mission planner called "traversal type" that lets you change this. This guide will show you how to use it so you can make sure your vehicle moves around the field just the way you want.

How it works

Usually, the mission planner decides on its own how the vehicle should move between different parts of the field based on what job it's doing. Here are some common tasks and how the vehicle usually moves for each:

  • Planting and Most Tasks: Moves within the headlands of the field.
  • Cultivating: Sticks close to the outer edges along the boundary.
  • Mowing and Snow Removal: Takes the quickest path from point to point.

At this time, here is what you can expect for each field operation:

Planting

Mowing

Note: As we continue to improve mission planning for these field operations, the traversal type may be subject to change.

How to change it

If you want to change the way your vehicle moves between passes, here’s how you can do it:

  1. Create a new mission: Create a new mission for your vehicle.
  2. Change the “Traversal” option: Choose how you want the vehicle to move:

    • Recommended: Lets the mission planner decide how to traverse.
    • Along the Boundary: Keeps the vehicle moving around the outermost headland. This setting is great for jobs like cultivating where you want to keep the vehicle as close as possible to the outermost headland of the field boundary and avoid damaging crops.
    • Within Headlands: Keeps the vehicle moving within the boundary headlands. This setting is useful when you want to keep all vehicle movement anywhere within the boundary headlands, but don’t need to keep the vehicle’s tires on the outermost headland pass. Traversals that are configured to stay within the headland can unnecessarily add to the traversal time for field operations that are acceptable to traverse through the field interior. Additionally, when the coverage plan is configured to have zero boundary headlands, the mission planner will ignore this setting.
    • Fastest to Point: The vehicle takes the quickest route from one point to another. This setting helps when you just need to get from A to B quickly, like when mowing or removing snow. However, this setting isn’t guaranteed to always be shorter than using the “Within Headlands” setting.
