Using the handheld safety switch

Ensure the safety of your vehicles, property and personnel by using the handheld safety switch.

Each Steward™ system includes a handheld safety switch. This allows operator's within ~1 mile line of sight of a Steward™ enabled vehicle to remotely shut off the vehicle's ignition in case of emergency. If there are multiple Steward enabled vehicles paired with the handheld safety switch, the ignition of all paired vehicles will be shut off when the handheld safety switch is activated.

Battery Level Indicators

The handheld safety switch is equipped with three (3) separate LED lights that illuminate when the red button is opened (or in the up position).

The illuminated LED color expresses its battery voltage:

  • Green: 3.7v or above
  • Yellow: 3.2v or above
  • Red: Less than 3.2v

While charging the handheld safety switch, the LED lights will illuminate to indicate the level of battery charge listed above.

Paired Connection Indicators

Blinking: When the Green, Yellow or Red LED lights are blinking, it means that the handheld safety switch is paired with one or more vPFMs. Depending on which LED is blinking, it will indicate the battery level, as indicated above.

Solid: When the Green, Yellow or Red LED lights are NOT blinking, it means that the handheld safety switch is NOT paired with one or more vPFMs. Depending on which LED is blinking, it will indicate the battery level, as indicated above.

Pairing a Handheld Safety Switch to a vPFM

Pair the handheld safety switch to Steward vPFM, by opening (clearing) the red button. Once paired, the corresponding battery level LED will blink. Make sure the handheld safety switch is within the 1 mile line-of-sight range of the vPFM when attempting to pair.

After pressing (closing) the red button, the LEDs will all turn off and the ignition of the paired vPFMs will be shut off.

Note: If the handheld safety switch is paired with the vehicle's vPFM, but then becomes unpaired, while the vehicle's ignition is on, it will kill the vehicle's ignition. For example, when you hop in your truck with the handheld safety switch, driving away from the paired vPFMs will kill those vehicle's ignition.

Charging a Handheld Safety Switch

To charge the handheld safety switch, insert a micro-usb charging cable into the port on the bottom of the handheld safety switch.

When a Handheld Safety Switch is plugged in to charge, It may initially connect with tractors in the area and kill their ignition.

Maintenance & Care

The handheld safety switch is not waterproof. It is best to keep the handheld safety switch away from environments that will expose it to moisture and dust.

Resetting the Handheld Safety Switch

After you have activated the handheld safety switch and the vehicles have shut down, you will need to reset the handheld safety switch. Within vMC, navigate to each vehicle that the handheld safety switch has been paired with. Under the "basic" tab, you will see a section titled "Killswitch". To reset the vPFM, tap the "Reset Killswitch" button and the tractor's ignition should turn back on.
