Obstacle Detection Override

Override obstacle detection when it's safe to resume navigation.

When the Sabanto Autonomy System detects an obstacle in the vehicle's path, it automatically pauses navigation to ensure safety. Previously, this required a field visit to manually verify the scene and resume the mission.

You can now resume navigation remotely by viewing live camera feeds from mission-control and certifying that the path is safe. This feature helps you:
  • Quickly resolve detections (tree branches, shadows, weather)
  • Resume after obstacles have cleared without a field visit
  • Manage remote vehicles more efficiently

Requirements

Before you can override obstacle detection and resume navigation remotely, these conditions must be met:
  • vOS version is up to date: Ensure your device has vOS 1.22.3 or above.
  • Front camera operational: The front camera must be connected and functioning.
  • Live video stream active: You must be able to view the live camera feed.
  • Obstacle detected: The vehicle must be paused specifically from obstacle detection.
If any requirement is not met, the button to resume will be disabled and manual intervention will be required.

When to Override Detected Obstacles

Use this feature when you've confirmed the scene is safe in one of these scenarios:
  • Non-Hazardous Detection: The obstacle sensor triggered on shadows, tree branches, or weather conditions that don't present a real hazard.
  • Obstacle Has Cleared: An animal, person, or vehicle that triggered the pause has moved away and the path is now clear.
  • Safe Static Obstacle: You can see an object off to the side of the path that won't interfere with the vehicle's travel, such as an overhanging tree branch.

Do NOT override when:

  • Obstacle Still in Path: An object is in the vehicle's path that could cause a collision.
  • Cannot See Clearly: Poor visibility, video quality or lighting obscures the full scene.
  • Camera Unavailable: The front camera is unavailable or failed to stream.
  • Uncertain About Safety: Any doubt about safety, perform a field visit or contact support.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Navigate to the Vehicle in vMC

When an obstacle is detected, you'll receive a notification from vMC.
  1. Open vMC (web or mobile app)
  2. Navigate to the vehicle page for the paused tractor
  3. Look for the "Obstacle" error badge on the screen

2. Verify the Path Forward is Clear

  1. Click the "Resume Navigation" button on the main vehicle page on vMC
    1. A safety confirmation modal will appear with warning text
    2. The front camera video feed will start automatically
    3. Wait for the live video to load (typically within 30 seconds)
  2. Review the video carefully before approving the resume - Look at the entire scene, not just the immediate foreground. Ensure it is safe to proceed.

    Here's what to look for:
    • Is there a clear object in the path?
    • Are there shadows or visual artifacts that could be a false detection?
    • Has weather (rain, snow, fog) created a false detection?
    • Are tree branches overhanging the path causing the sensor to trigger?

3. Initiate Resume Process

  1. Once you've reviewed the video to confirm the scene is safe, click the "Yes, continue" button. The "Yes, continue" button will remain disabled until the video stream is confirmed to be running.

    Next, you will see:
    • Camera Snapshots: Images will be captured from all active cameras, and displayed in the activity feed.
    • Override Detected Obstacles: The obstacle detection system will ignore any existing detections for 60 seconds from the moment the operator confirmed.
    • Activity Event: The vehicle's activity feed will display a message stating obstacle detection was overridden by the specific operator.
  2. Verify the vehicle begins moving within a few seconds and continue to monitor the vehicle's progress to ensure normal operation for at least 60 seconds after resuming.

Use caution: By continuing, you accept responsibility for telling the vehicle it is safe to proceed.

Troubleshooting

"Camera stream unavailable" Error

Symptom:
Resume Navigation button is disabled with message "Camera stream unavailable (disconnected)"

Causes:
  • Front camera has disconnected from the vehicle system
    • Cable connection loose or damaged
  • Camera hardware failure or software malfunction
  • Severe network connectivity issues
  • Front camera was not able to turn on correctly
Solutions:
  1. Close and re-open the obstacle detection override confirmation modal
  2. Power cycle the system:
    1. Use the battery disconnect to power down the system completely
    2. Wait 30 seconds
    3. Power the system back on
    4. Wait for cameras to reconnect (typically 1-2 minutes)
  3. Inspect cable connections (requires field visit):
    1. Power the system down with the battery disconnect
    2. Ensure all camera cables are securely fastened to both the vPFM and cameras
    3. Look for damaged, pinched, or disconnected cables
  4. Contact support if the error persists after performing the above steps.
Workaround: If you cannot restore camera functionality, you'll need to perform a field visit to manually remove any active obstacles.
